LIBS Measurement System from LTB at Hannover Messe 2015, April 13-17

In collaboration with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and the Institute for Applied Photonics (IAP), LTB Lasertechnik Berlin has developed a measurement system for inline process control of complex material systems as part of a research project, combining the analytical methods laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) in one device.

The prototype analysis system is specifically applied in the thermochemical treatment of phosphorus-containing sewage sludge ashes for fertilizer production in a rotary kiln at approximately 1000°C. In real-time, it can measure the concentrations of major and trace elements, such as heavy metals, in the ash. This enables immediate regulation of plant process parameters to ensure the required treatment.

Valuable ingredients in inorganic waste materials are considered potential and sustainable raw material sources for the future under the term “urban mining.” LIBS is a suitable online measurement technique for the industrial recovery of raw materials, particularly under harsh environmental conditions.

The measurement system will be displayed from April 13-17, 2015, at the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing booth:
